Virtues that We've Forgotten or Ignored

By my queenstown on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 with 1 comment

Looking at how some online websites criticising and dismissing a dead person can be heart wrenching because this particular lady did not offend them and it was the decision of the mainstream media to cover her life story. She is a simple woman. And she is the lady behind the most (in*)famous Singaporean leader. While her achievements and accolades are debatable, it is her simplicity and sincerity that touched Singaporeans and Queenstown residents alike.

Mr and Mrs Lee Kuan Yew in their Youths

63 years in unison. 63 years of blissful marriage. This correspondent wonders how many couples could live happily together for that period of time.

As Singapore's iron man, MM Lee put it, "If she weren't an influence, supposing I had married somebody else, I might have become a different person, not that I would be a different person, but the things that I would have been able to do, the kind of backdrop I would have had, family, support, would have been different," said MM Lee.

She once said, "You can't explain these things... He had tremendous aplomb, self-confidence..."

Everyone knows how fiery and stubborn our Minister Mentor can be in politics. And it is amazing she could live harmoniously for 63 years with his mannerism. It takes a lot of EQ and a lot of wisdom to be a compromising husband and wife. Here's a mutual exchange of praises and a mutual exchange of respect between the couple. As the old Chinese proverb 相见如宾 mentions that couples should treat each other like "guests," would couples today be as loving and sincere to each other?

Lee Kuan Yew visits Queenstown

Being the first satellite estate, ruling statesmen, bureaucrats and other dignitaries visit Queenstown pretty often. The industrial estates, the polyclinic and sports complexes were officially opened by the elder statesman. Hence, he would bring his family occasionally to several locations for activities or plain sightseeing. One resident, Mdm Tan Mui Peng, 65, who used to live in Strathmore, recalled how Mrs Lee stayed out of limelight and talked to the residents about her family when MM went on house or market visits. And that's humility. If you have the stature as the Prime Minster's wife, would you flaunt it or keep it to yourself?

It would be sweeping to mention that Mdm Kwa Geok Choo was the only woman who possessed such virtues. And epitomising her as a saint will be unnecessary. However, in today's context, how many people would bother to remember such details on how to treat someone sincerely and humbly? A person's achievements is judged by how many friends and how she will be remembered when he or she passed away, and not the size of his wealth. Life is too short for us to pick on the deceased or pinpoint at each and every detail. Let us treat our loved ones, our neighbours and our community with sincerity today...

*for you to decide
